A car bomb has gone off in the Sydney suburb of Wollongong.
Police have been called to Wollongs Creek, near the Melbourne airport, after a vehicle was discovered with a bomb inside.
The vehicle was taken to the Wollons Creek Police Station where the bomb was removed.
“We’re still working to establish the cause and we’re working to identify the person that is responsible,” Inspector Peter Smith said.
Police said a vehicle carrying a bomb was found on Wollings Creek, about 15 kilometres north of Melbourne, on Saturday.
They are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident to contact police.
The explosion occurred at about 11:00am on Saturday (AEDT) in the Wolls Creek area of Wolls Lakes.
Witnesses described hearing the explosion and seeing police arriving on the scene.
“I thought it was an explosion, I thought it might be a bomb or something.
It was like an explosion of a car,” witness James Brown said.
Mr Brown said police told him the explosion had occurred in the suburb.
